The interview was completely resume-based. There were no DSA questions and nothing on CS fundamentals like OOPs, OS, CN, or DBMS. The interviewers were very friendly and made the conversation comfortable throughout.
Introduction and background
Started with my introduction. Since I'm from Chemical Engineering, they asked why I want to go into tech instead of a core chemical role. Have a genuine, clear answer ready for this if you're from a non-CS branch.
Projects and technical discussion
Asked about my projects and why I chose that particular tech stack. Questions on MongoDB, such as why I used it and how it works in my project. Asked what an API is, then asked me to write code for a POST API. Gave me a design task: how would I build a website that translates whatever is written on it into another language? They focused on my approach and thought process rather than a perfect answer.
Domain and company questions
How do banks work? Why ICICI?
HR questions
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Are you okay with a sales role? Are you ready for relocation, and why?
My questions for them
At the end, they asked if I had any questions. I asked about ICICI's current initiatives, and also mentioned that I knew ICICI has a tie-up with IIT Kanpur. Showing that I had researched the company seemed to go down well.
Tips: Know every line of your resume, especially your projects. Be ready to justify your tech stack choices. Revise basics of the technologies you've used, like MongoDB and REST APIs, and be able to write a simple API endpoint. Read up on how banks make money (deposits, loans, interest margins) and ICICI's recent news and initiatives. Prepare honest answers about sales roles and relocation, since these were asked directly. Non-CS students: have a convincing story for why you're switching to tech.
